The challenge

Refrigerated transport runs on diesel-powered gensets

Temperature-controlled goods make up a significant share of freight volumes. The energy required for refrigeration is currently supplied by diesel gensets, which are noisy, costly and emission-intensive. On rail, this energy has so far not been available on board.

LoudCostlyEmission-intensive
The solution

The wagon powers itself using its motion and batteries

A pump on the axle drives a generator. While the train is moving, kinetic energy is converted into electricity. The battery powers the load during standstill and handling, emission-free and monitored throughout.

Innovation and sustainability for rail

The cold chain is the primary application. Beyond that, the system can be used for other cargo and applications that require energy directly on the wagon, such as tank containers with electric heating. The system comes in two variants based on the same principle: the Tower version for pocket wagons, the Underframe version for flat wagons.

Built locally,
engineered globally

One system, built and supported in the markets where it operates.

Beyond Europe

Built locally, with partners who know their railways

Rail works differently in every market. We develop our systems in Austria and work with experienced local partners worldwide who adapt our technology to each market, build the PowerBox locally and provide on-site service.

UNITED STATES

Partnering across North America

North America is the largest rail freight market in the world, and the one place where the cold chain still moves almost entirely by road. Our partners on the ground know the market, its wagons and its operators.

INDIA

HUSE LIVE

HUSE LIVE, part of Sujan Industries in Mumbai, is our partner for Indian rail: the SWS-PowerBox®, built in India, for Indian conditions.

AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND
Freightquip

Freightquip

Freightquip, an experienced rail technology partner with its own workshop equipment and shunting vehicles, brings the PowerBox to Australia and New Zealand and supports us with installation and service on the ground.

For shippers & forwarders

Move temperature-controlled freight without a diesel genset and credibly document the cost and emissions savings.

Zero-emission reefer transport

Cold freight without gensets, credible in your emissions accounting.

Lower energy cost per trip

Battery electricity replaces fuel, refuelling stops and genset servicing.

Proof of an unbroken cold chain

Continuous temperature and position records, exportable for your customers.

Longer distances on rail

Autonomous electricity opens routes that only worked by truck before.

For rail operators

Upgrade the wagons you already own for cold-chain traffic, without investing in new wagons.

Reefer traffic on existing wagons

PowerBoxes mount to standard pocket wagons, no new fleet required.

No external power supply required along the route

Energy is carried directly on the wagon and is available independently of any infrastructure.

Fewer service interventions

Remote diagnostics catch faults before they disrupt operations.

A new revenue segment

Open cold-chain traffic that has so far stayed on the road.

For terminals & ports

Emission-free power supply at the terminal, with low maintenance and predictable charging.

Quiet, emission-free yards

No running gensets during dwell, less noise, no exhaust.

Handled with existing equipment

Standard handling procedures and gear; nothing new to buy.

Predictable charging windows

Additional charging can be provided at the terminal via the grid.

Trained crews on site

Hands-on operator training, as delivered with VTG at Trieste.

Hardware + software + data

The SWS platform

Fleet, battery and cargo data are centralised and available in real time.

Every system, live

Every system, live

FAQ

The questions we get asked

Something missing? Ask us directly.

The PowerBox is in regular service across Europe, including on the Hamburg–Budapest, Oslo–Narvik and Wrocław–Koper routes, carrying a wide range of cargo. The first units have already covered 500,000 kilometres without major issues.

A reefer container requires around 3 kW on average. An 80 kWh PowerBox can therefore power it for approximately 27 hours. Actual consumption depends on the cargo, set temperature and humidity control. The container should already be pre-cooled when connected.

The PowerBox can be charged from the grid at up to 10 kW.

The wagon does not need to be modified. The installation stays within the loading gauge, G1 is maintained, and the wagon can operate without restrictions on the European rail network.

No specific training is required. The system is easy to operate and self-explanatory. We nevertheless recommend a short introduction for terminal staff.
