The challenge

Refrigerated transport runs on diesel

Over 95% of transport runs on the road, kept cold by diesel gensets that are loud, costly and emission-intensive. On rail, the electricity simply was not available on board.

LoudCostlyEmission-intensive
The solution

The wagon powers itself using its motion and batteries

A pump on the axle drives a generator, so while the train runs, kinetic energy becomes electricity. The battery carries the load through standstill and handling, emission-free and monitored throughout.

Rail freight in transition

Innovation and sustainability for rail

The cold chain is the first application; other loads that need energy on the wagon follow the same principle. Two builds of the same system, the Tower for retrofits on fleets already in service, the Underframe for new wagons and full rebuilds.

Built locally
Engineered globally

One system, built and supported in the markets where it operates.

Beyond Europe

Built locally, with partners who know their railways

Rail works differently in every market. Rather than shipping from Graz into the world, we work with established rail suppliers on the ground, they build and service the PowerBox in their region.

UNITED STATES

Partnering across North America

The largest rail freight market in the world, and the one place the cold chain still moves almost entirely by road. Our partners on the ground know the market, its wagons and its operators.

INDIA

HUSE LIVE

HUSE LIVE, part of Sujan Industries in Mumbai, is our partner for Indian rail: the SWS-PowerBox®, built in India, for Indian conditions.

AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND
Freightquip

Freightquip

Freightquip, an established rail supplier with its own workshop equipment and shunting vehicles, brings the PowerBox to Australia and New Zealand, and climbed under the wagon with us to prove it.

For shippers & forwarders

Move temperature-controlled freight without a diesel genset, and report it credibly.

Zero-emission reefer transport

Cold freight without gensets, credible in your emissions accounting.

Lower energy cost per trip

Battery electricity replaces fuel, refuelling stops and genset servicing.

Proof of an unbroken cold chain

Continuous temperature and position records, exportable for your customers.

Longer distances on rail

Autonomous electricity opens routes that only worked by truck before.

For rail operators

Cold-chain traffic on the wagons you already own, without a rolling-stock programme.

Reefer traffic on existing wagons

PowerBoxes mount to standard pocket wagons, no new fleet required.

No lineside electricity needed

The energy travels with the load, independent of terminal infrastructure.

Fewer service interventions

Remote diagnostics catch faults before they reach the train.

A new revenue segment

Open cold-chain traffic that has so far stayed on the road.

For terminals & ports

Quiet yards, predictable energy, and crews who know the system.

Quiet, emission-free yards

No running gensets during dwell, less noise, no exhaust.

Handled with existing equipment

Standard handling procedures and gear; nothing new to buy.

Predictable charging windows

Energy is planned at the terminal instead of reacted to on the move.

Trained crews on site

Hands-on operator training, as delivered with VTG at Trieste.

Hardware + software + data

FIELD REPORT · COLD WINTER 2023

Iced over. Still running

A Scandinavian winter, on the line and at the terminal: ice on the frame, ice over the whole connection panel. The PowerBox kept generating, the reefers kept their temperature. Nobody had to touch a thing.

FAQ

The questions we get asked

Something missing? Ask us directly.

On regular services across Europe, Hamburg–Budapest, Oslo–Narvik and Wrocław–Koper among them, with very different goods. The first units have passed 300,000 kilometres without any major problems.

A reefer container draws about 3.75 kW on average, so an 80 kWh box runs it for roughly 21 hours. Actual consumption sits between 1 and 6 kW depending on the goods, the setpoint and whether humidity control is needed, and the container should already be pre-cooled when it is connected.

Three ways. While the train runs, the wheelset recuperates about 0.13 kWh per kilometre, roughly 615 kilometres to fill an empty 80 kWh box with nothing connected. At the terminal or loading track, a Type 2 plug charges at up to 22 kW, so under four hours, and a CEE 32 socket works via adapter cable.

No. The installation does not affect the clearance gauge, G1 is complied with, and the wagon holds ERA certification. It runs on the European rail network without restriction.

None in the strict sense, operation is simple and every instruction sits on the inside of the service door. We still recommend a short session with the terminals involved, because understanding the system makes crews far more willing to use it.
